Several years ago listeners of WRAF teamed up with Trans World Radio (TWR) to help the Ticuna Indians in South America reach their own people over the radio. Here's an update from our friend John Summerville who is the Director of Radio Station Partnerships...
TWR continues its efforts to reach remotely situated Ticuna Indians in South America with the gospel. Ticuna is a tonal language spoken by approximately 40,000 river-oriented natives in Brazil, Peru and Colombia. Tonal languages use vocal pitch to signal different meanings between the same words.
“Since Ticuna is completely unlike any other vernacular, it is important for us to reach these people in their heart language,” says TWR’s Jim Munger. “Radio is a powerful tool to penetrate inaccessible or restricted areas like where the Ticunas live.”
Staff members from TWR ministry partner RTM-Brazil recently helped construct a new studio facility on a Ticunas reservation located in the heart of the Amazon Jungle. According to a recent report from RTM-Brazil, “Project Ticunas is already a reality in the Filadelfia Village located on the border between Peru, Colombia and Brazil, by the Solimoes River. There are thousands of Indians living in about 125 villages.”
For more than two years, RTM-Brazil has been helping the Ticunas produce their own evangelistic radio programs. Broadcasts are aired from local FM stations into strategic Amazon zones where Ticunas live.
