Listener's Need Help

This email was received from Ken Pickle, a long-time WRAF listener and supporter:

As you may know, Samantha, Jeff's, and Rasene's Homeplace burnt down Christmas Eve, we have seen what the devil can do, now may God's Glory be shown.

A trust for Jelly Bean Farm Building materials, fixtures, and appliances is set up at Southern Bank & Trust P.O. Box 2080 Clarkesville, Ga 30523.

Call 706 754-0001 and ask for Mike Kelly. Thank you & God Bless, Ken.

Christmas Morning, in the entrance of the horse barn, with the home still smoking 60 feet away, we had Christmas, read the Word of God, prayed, cried, and sought the Lord and his comfort.

A family friend had gathered presents from neighbors, a tree was cut from the woods near by, and like Bethleham so long ago, we had Jesus in our hearts, in a stable.

No words could fully convey, our Love, and gratitude for the lives that
were spared.

Although the Girls lost their four puppy dogs in the fire, and being sick with grief, they are comforted by the Lord's promise to "Work all things to the good of those who love Him, and called according to His purpose."

The Jelly Bean farm home originally built in the 1890's was constructed of log timbers. When the late Mr. & Mrs. Sam Hernandez purchased the 22 acres in 1986, their vision to create a safe environment for their Grand Daughters, Ashley,Raybon, and Della was carried on by Samantha, who in turn has home schooled the Girls with the help of a teacher aid Kathy Hardy.

The Girls nearing graduation, have been now set back as the fire destroyed materials, books, and paperwork. Samantha, and the girls have trained horses, given riding lessons, and boarded horses at times.

With the current economy, there was no insurance policy on the home.
Jeff, a man of many talents, is an accomplished carpenter, and with friends, and family will be able to rebuild, as building materials are supplied.

Jelly Bean Farm has also, sheltered the Elderly, fed the hungry, and is always ready to help where needed.

God Bless you as you are able to give. - Ken P.

WRAF has vetted this request as a legitimate need and encourages to respond as God leads.

Help The "Untouchables"

Spread across South Asia is a forgotten people group too numerous to count. They’re despised by their countrymen and viewed as subhuman. Even the shadows they cast are believed to be contaminated by their filth. They are the Dalits, the "Untouchables" of South Asia.

Their life is valued at less than the animals whose dung they clean from the streets. Banned from the rest of society, they find employment removing trash, discarding animal carcasses and cleaning out latrines and sewers.

When you purchase items from the Gospel For Asia Christmas catalog, you’re choosing to send more than a chicken, a cow or a sewing machine. You’re sending hope that can forever change a life.

Cows supply milk that can be sold. A sewing machine for a widow creates a career and chickens supply an income. That’s why I’m urging you to call 1-877-209-0826 and purchase a gift or gifts that will change lives. Call now 1-877-209-0826.

It is no secret that many people today are drowning in a sea of debt. In fact, 92% of every dollar earned in America today goes to satisfying debt. Debt has become a way of life! It’s the newest addiction. Instead of living for the future, we end up paying for the past.

Toccoa Falls College Receives Excellent Ranking in U.S. News and World Report

Washington, D.C. – August 17, 2010 – Toccoa Falls College recently earned the 46th (the first tier) spot among Regional Colleges in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. This exclusive ranking came after surveying more than 1,400 schools nationwide.

The college’s name will be listed in the September issue of U.S. News and World Report, on newsstands starting August 31. Over the past two decades, the U.S. News college rankings, which group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

After learning the news Toccoa Falls College president Dr. Wayne Gardner said, “It is very exciting to have Toccoa Falls College ranked in the first tier of the US News and World Report. This ranking shows the excellent progress we have made over the past few years in our academic growth and public recognition.”

The 2011 Best Colleges feature the established rankings of the Best National Universities and Best National Liberal Arts Colleges, while also including rankings of A+ Schools for B Students, Great Schools at Great Prices, and Up-and-Coming Schools, among others.

The 2011 Best Colleges package provides the most thorough examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of up to 16 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and, for National Universities and National Liberal Art Colleges, "graduation rate performance" and high school counselor ratings of colleges.

Toccoa Falls College is considered one of the top Christian colleges in the nation. The campus consists of more than 1,100 acres, which is bordered by national forest. Its graduates serve in various vocations around the world. Degree programs include: Business Administration, Biology, Cross-Cultural Studies, Teacher Education, Counseling-Psychology, Biblical Studies, English, and much more. African Orphans Need Your Support!

At 16, Rute's mother, father and oldest sister died, leaving her the head of a household and caretaker of the family.

"Everywhere we turned, we heard about the crisis with orphans. Virtually every ministry I visited and every person I met seemed to be struggling with the problem on some level. Most pastors have taken in one or two children themselves, and no matter what ministry they are leading, they've expanded their program to include some outreach for these children," explains Jim Cavnar, president of Cross.

Some younger orphans are taken in by Christian families. In other cases, a teenage daughter or son may try to keep the family together with the help of the church. It's a difficult life, but with mentors and assistance from Christians, these families have a fighting chance to stay together.

"During our visit, we met several of these struggling families, and we offered our help. One young girl named Rute Salomao was living in a mud and straw house that was literally on the verge of collapsing. After returning, we sent funds to build a new cement block house for the family. It wasn't expensive by U.S. standards, but it has had a huge impact on living standards of the family, providing them with security and a solid foundation upon which they can rebuild their lives," Cavnar says.

In most other cases, children are taken in by Christian families – usually at great personal sacrifice. Poverty is a way of life in Africa, so these host families are usually struggling themselves, and they welcome any support the church can provide. Discovering this, Cross International agreed to help by funding the basic needs of the orphan by giving the host families help with food, clothing, medicines, educational expenses and other basic human needs.

The cost of this outreach – just $68 per child for the entire year – represents an astounding opportunity to provide significant help...for very little money.

"These people lead a very simple life and their needs are modest," Cavnar explains. "Still, it's amazing to think that we American Christians can have such a big impact for so little money. For just $68, we can effectively rescue a child. We can give these little ones a greater sense of security – and new hope for the future.

Ultimately, seeing the needs in Africa should bring the words of James 1:27 to mind – True religion is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Clearly, God's heart is broken by the suffering of these vulnerable children, and He is honored when we Christians realize that fact and respond as an act of service and worship. That alone should be reason enough for us to take up this challenge and help Africa's orphans in any way we can.

By MIKE STOBBE

ATLANTA (AP) -- Cooking chicken on the grill this summer? Be careful. Poultry is still the leading culprit in food poisoning outbreaks, health officials said Thursday.

Chicken, turkey and other poultry accounted for 17 percent of the food-borne illness outbreaks reported to the government. Beef and leafy vegetables were close behind, at 16 percent and 14 percent

Fun on Facebook Friday

I see where the ever present social networking site Facebook now has over 500 million users. This of course might account for the almost 10% unemployment in our country, but I digress.

If the Facebook nation were a country it would be the 3rd largest in the world. It is also the second most popular web site in the world (after Google) and for many has replaced email, telephones and other forms of communication.

No doubt it’s an incredible way to reach a wide audience and that’s why WRAF uses Facebook to connect with you and reach out to those who are not familiar with our programming.

To encourage more of you to join us in this arena we are starting “Fun on Facebook Fridays” at WRAF. Visit the page frequently for various contests and lots of prizes including free music. It’s a “Fun on Facebook Friday” from your friends at Toccoa Falls Radio.

Rick Warren temporarily loses eyesight

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Pastor Rick Warren was briefly hospitalized due to an eye-injury that he suffered while gardening at home.

Warren's spokesman Larry Ross said the sap of a firestick plant got into Warren's eyes when he wiped his brow while gardening. The sap can cause temporary blindness, although Ross said Warren can see.

The 56-year-old pastor was treated overnight and released Tuesday from Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. On Thursday, he sent a message to his Twitter followers asking for their prayers.

"My eyes were severely burned," Warren wrote. "Excruciating pain."
He is expected to make a full recovery.

Warren is the author of the multimillion-selling book "Purpose Driven Life," and founder of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest in Orange County.

New guidelines aim to reduce repeated C-sections

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most women who've had a C-section, and many who've had two, should be allowed to try labor with their next baby, say new guidelines - a step toward reversing the "once a cesarean, always a cesarean" policies taking root in many hospitals.

Ceiling fans reduce energy costs summer and winter

The concept is simple. If you use a ceiling fan, you can raise your thermostat and still get the same cooling effect. That means lower electric bills in the long run.
Ceiling fans work by creating a wind-chill effect. As in winter, when the wind makes it feel colder outside, so the wind — or motion — created by ceiling fans makes you feel cooler in the summer.

Joni Eareckson Tada to Undergo Surgery for Breast Cancer

Please pray for our friend and ministry partner -- Joni Eareckson Tada. We just receieved this news:

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., June 23, 2010 – Internationally-beloved disability advocate, artist and quadriplegic Joni Eareckson Tada has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it was announced today by Doug Mazza, Joni and Friends International Disability Center president and COO, following confirmation by her physicians.

“Joni is to undergo several more tests, followed by surgery within the week,” said Mazza. “The extent of the cancer will not be determined until the procedure.”

Ken Tada, Joni’s husband of nearly 28 years, is very hopeful. “The doctors have assured us that more advancements have been made in the last five years in treating breast cancer then in the last 150 years,” he said. “We are confident Joni is in very good hands.”

Joni echoed Ken’s sentiments. “I’ve often said that our afflictions come from the hand of our all-wise and sovereign God, who loves us and wants what is best for us. So, although cancer is something new, I am content to receive from God whatever He deems fit for me,” she said. “Yes, it’s alarming, but rest assured that Ken and I are utterly convinced that God is going to use this to stretch our faith, brighten our hope and strengthen our witness to others.”
