Classical Conversations for Homeschoolers

Attention, Home School Parents!

Classical Conversations Maysville, Georgia meets on Tuesday's from 9:30am to 1:30am at Grove Level Baptist Church near the Tanger Outlet Mall at Banks Crossing.

Classical Conversations is a once-a-week, supplemental, academic program providing a committed Christian community of structure and support, along with great fellowship for the students and parents. Each of our programs utilize the classical tools of learning and emphasize life-long learning skills.

For more information email: georgiaschaefers@windstream.net

Our Goals:
• To provide foundational instruction for K-6th graders to enable them to know God and to make Him known
• To participate in a rigorous memorization program capitalizing on the young child’s ability to absorb facts
• To instill a comprehensive understanding of Providence by mastering a timeline of significant historical events• To teach students to draw and label continents from memory
• To develop a strong science vocabulary, to participate in science projects, and to teach the scientific method
• To help students develop oral and written presentation skills
• To model for students a respect for God’s Word, the USA, and one another
• To memorize the major grammar rules of the English language
• To demonstrate how to learn Latin
• To master common math tables, conversions, squares, and cubes
• To encourage women to form friendships and provide accountability for educational excellence

"I have been homeschooling for 11 years and have taken my boys to fine arts academies and educational co-ops. Classical Conversations is THE BEST I’ve ever seen for helping moms to help their children learn great history, science, English grammar, math and geography! Our children will also do an art project and a science experiment EVERY week! So they get the OOOH factor with other boys and girls (and you don't have to prepare or clean it up)! The cost for what you get is so small: $13 per week per child with a one-time $50 registration fee and a $50 supply fee (per year). The program runs for 12 more weeks. The instructional time is 9:30 to 12:30 with lunch and play time for an hour after." --- Cindy Race

The following video was not produced by Classical Conversations Corporate, but by the local CC group in Memphis, TN. I think it gives a pretty good idea of what the classes are like and what you can expect:

American Evangelicalism Conference at Toccoa Falls College

Toccoa Falls College and WRAF presents “The American Evangelicalism Conference” - February 27-28, 2009, on the college campus. This unique event covers such topics as stem cell research, business ethics, immigration policies, Christian worldview in the role of science, inerrancy in a Postmodern era, urban decay and much more.

What is this conference about?

The eight-year period from 1976, Newsweek’s Year of the Evangelical, through 1984 was quite formative for American, evangelical Protestantism. It was during this time that Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority launched the evangelical community into an active political bloc, James Dobson started Focus on the Family, Francis Schaeffer was at the height of his intellectual influence, and Billy Graham’s ministry penetrated the Iron Curtain. This period was also significant for the movement’s identity, as Evangelicals defined themselves theologically, politically, socially, culturally, and so forth. The problem is that it has been a quarter century since then.

The contexts in which American Evangelicals live have changed dramatically. In 1984 the Cold War seemed to be entering a new freeze, China was a Third World country, Postmodernity was in its infancy, the United States was revered by much of the world, homosexuality was taboo, and the internet did not exist. Yet the movement seems oddly oblivious to these changing contexts as it uncritically thrusts its past conclusions into the present. The time has come for a serious reevaluation of American Evangelicalism’s beliefs, direction, and its engagement with the larger society. That is not to say that the conclusions reached by Evangelicals a quarter century ago were simply wrong. Surely there are some aspects of the conclusions that need to be reaffirmed, others that need to be nuanced, and still others that need to be revamped.

How much is admission? How do I register?

For those who register at least two weeks before the conference (February 13th), admission will cost $15 for students and $20 for non-students. For those who buy tickets at the door, admission will cost $25. To register, please click here.

Christmas at Toccoa Falls

Join your friends at WRAF for a weeklong celebration at our broadcast studios on the TFC campus.

We will have an open-house Monday (December 15) thru Friday (December 19) during the hours of 9 AM to 5 PM.

Bring your family for hot chocolate, coffee, apple cider, and homemade cookies.Take a tour our studios and the beautiful waterfalls. There will also have an ornament exchange where you can swap out that gaudy ornament your aunt Gertrude made for a normal looking one from our tree or one of the ornaments brought in by another listener. (As a Red Sox fan a Derek Jeter ornament qualifies as an "ugly" ornament).

Everyone who comes receives a free Christmas gift from WRAF.

by Cindy Ortiz Durant

"A child will never ignore a new found, smooth and colorful stone. It quickly becomes the new favorite and will have a safe place in a special pocket. In Rumbly, Tumbly Roland Stone, new author Cindy Ortiz Durant gives voice and character to these otherwise silent friends. The story's lesson, based on Matthew 5:43-45, brings together a wise and mature Monty Boulder and a young, resentful Roland Stone. Roland is one unhappy rock who just wants a better view. Monty Boulder’s wisdom helps Roland shape a new attitude toward others. Rumbly, Tumbly Roland Stone teaches an important lesson through one of God's quiet creations so we may all see with a better view."
